Does time stand still? Evaluating blood collection tubes for plasma biomarkers using selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mass spectrometry

Minor increases in protein recovery were evident in the levels of intact plasma proteins as measured by SRM-MS from samples collected protease inhibitors, but these were largely not significant. Moreover, this observation is consistent until at least 8 hours before conducting MS analysis, although the yield of protein decreased markedly in E and P tubes over this time. With the relative costs between E:G and E:P tubes currently 1:2 and 1:120 respectively, it is arguable whether the degree of differences observed for proteins between tube types is of sufficient concern to warrant specialised collection tubes for biomarker studies.
