Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as direct physical impact to the head. At the impact zone, tissue deformation and hemorrhage lead to severe neuronal damage by necrotic cell death. In the post-traumatic period, a series of complex secondary molecular events are triggered that are both degenerative and regenerative processes [1]. Clinically, there is little that can be done to the initial damage. However, the injuries resulting from the secondary molecular events can be therapeutically treated. Objective biomarkers to follow the treatment in the post-traumatic period would greatly improve clinical decisions.
