The feasibility of utilizing GC-FTMS to analyze CDDs/CDFs and BCDDs/BCDFs on the capillary GC time scale has been demonstrated. Ultrahigh mass accuracy (0.5 ppm with external calibration) and ultrahigh mass resolution (50,000 to 100,000) have been demonstrated. Due to the acquisition of full mass range, ultrahigh resolution spectra using the GC-FTMS, as opposed to SIM using the GC-HRMS method, it is possible to analyze the data and screen for other possible sample components such as the mixed BCDD/BCDF in the same analysis. Future studies are being directed towards improving the detection limits of the system for trace level dioxin analysis via optimization of the system.
