Epizootic lymphangitis in working equines: Its not just about the horse

Epizootic lymphangitis (EZL], a disease classically associated with large gatherings of equids, was eradicated from many countries during the early 20th century through mass surveillance and slaughter policies. Today, it persists in parts of east andnorthern Africa, the Middle East and China.Recent studies originating in Ethiopia have highlighted the extent of the problem. The overall prevalence in equines is 18% but this can reach 39% in some areas. The disease is mostly present in areas between 1500-2300 m above sea level (Ameni 2006). EZLis endemic in Ethiopia and there is a lack of coordinated control measures and restricted treatment access. Consequently the effects on the working equines and their owners are far-reaching.
