Ionomers, having a small amount of ionic groups in a relatively non-polar polymer matrix, became commercially available in 1965. Since then, the properties and morphologies of various ionomers have been studied extensively. The interactions between ionic groups make the ionic groups form ionic aggregates, called multiplets. Now, it is widely accepted that the multiplets reduce the mobility of polymer chains surrounding them. As an ion concentration increases, the number of multiplets increases and eventually the restricted mobility regions start overlapping, resulting in large continuous regions. These large restricted mobility regions (so-called clusters) exhibit their own glass transition temperature (Tg).
