Prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a type II transmembrane protein that is utilized as both a diagnostic agent and a treatment modality for prostate carcinoma in humans. While this protein is largely restricted to the prostate, studies haveshown that it is also expressed in neovasculature of solid tumors. Canine hemangiosarcoma (cHSA) is a biologically aggressive tumor histology arising from malignant endothelium, and is anticipated to also express PSMA. For the targeting of PSMA with novel therapies including nanoparticles, successful treatment outcomes are in part dependent upon differential surface expressions.
