THERAPEUTIC OPTIONS FOR CANINE GLIOMAS

Advancements in treatment options for complex disorders of the central nervous system in veterinary medicine usually shadows the development of techniques and instrumentation in the human neurology and neurosurgery fields. In most instances, the success rates in the human fields have steadily increased; however, this has not been the case in the treatment of gliomas. All medical disciplines continue to struggle with this tumor of the central nervous system with consistently low mean survival tunes. The advent of applicable chemotherapy as an adjunct to the treatment of intracranial gliomas has added additional weeks to the mean survival times and has been the only definitive breakthrough in a number of years. In the veterinary neurosurgical field, data concerning the surgical therapy for canine gliomas is almost non-existent partially because of the relatively low case numbers and a lack of a centralized approach to specific therapies. A wider availability of advanced imaging techniques is now allowing for a larger number of cases diagnosed and for the opportunity to treat many of the patients at less advanced stage of the disease. Seemingly, we are at a point in our development where a collection of a larger number of cases is feasible and the use of some of the newer multi-modality techniques can yield clinically applicable data on its effectiveness in the treatment of canine gliomas. This presentation will review the diagnosis and treatment protocol for canine gliomas at the Auburn UniversitySmall Animal Teaching Hospital (AUSATH)and briefly review or identify some other available treatment options.
