RESEARCH CLINICAL EXPERTISE IN HEMODYNAMIC MONITORING OF CRITICALLY ILL FOALS

The goal of hemodynamic monitoring in critical care medicine is to ensure adequate oxygen delivery to tissues in an attempt to maintain normal organ function. Early recognition of metabolic or physiologic derangements will allow prompt medical intervention and may contribute to improving survival. Selection of monitoring aids should be based on reliability, availability, cost, and the value of information gained by their use. Once selected, these measurements should be obtained at regular intervals,because trends and temporal changes are more important than individual measurements at a given point in time. This text briefly reviews indications, usefulness, and limitations of common monitoring practices in critically ill foals.
