Anaerobic bacteria in pyogenic infections: incidence and susceptibility to antianaerobic agents

In this work anaerobic bacteria were isolated from 72 out of 157 pyogenic infections samples (46%). Isolates in the order of frequency were: Bacteroides fragilis, Gram +ve cocci, Prevotella melaninogenica, Fusobacterium spp., Bacteroides ovatus, Prevotella ruminicola, and Bacteroides ureolyticus. Linezolid, metronidazole, chlo-ramphenicol and imipenem had the best activity against Bacteroides and Prevotella spp., linezolid, quiopristin/dalfopristin, vancomycin, teicoplanin and imipenem against Gram +ve cocci, while linezolid, imipenem, cefoxitin and metronidazole were the most active against Fusobacterium spp.Anaerobic organisms dominate our indigenous flora. These organisms cause infections associated with surgical procedures and pulmonary, genitourinary, skin, soft tissue, and diabetic foot infections especially in immunocompromised and debilitated hosts (1, 2). The B. fragilis group comprises the most important gram negative anaerobic pathogens. However, infections with non - B. fragilis group including species recently classified as Prevotella, Porphyromonas and Fusobacterium are increasingly encountered (3). Historically, antimicrobial regimens for the treatment of B. fragilis group infections have been limited to selected agents. However, anaerobes have showed trends towards some increasing resistance in recent years (4).
