摘要

The Davis Kempton Mine Complex consists of nine interconnected abandoned mines, covering a surface area of about 60 square kilometers. As a legacy of these mining operations, acid mine water exists near mine pool surfaces and discharges to local streams and rivers. As part of the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory conducted helicopter electromagnetic (HEM) surveys with over an area of 64 square kilometers that included the Davis Kempton Mine Complex during 1999. The purpose of these surveys was to determine if the HEM survey data can provide useful insight for abandoned mine characterization and acid mine water remediation efforts using Coal Combustion by-Products (CCPs). A primary research goal of the CRADA was to mitigate Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) through the massive and beneficial use of CCPs.
