Over the last decade in South Africa, electrical output from coal fired power stations has increased from 148 003 GWh to 194 046 GWh. This has resulted in 35 percent increase in coal consumption from 76.8 to 104.37 million tons in 2003. To ensure that the demand can be met, power stations are supplementing the normal coal supply with alternative coals sources, which are invariably trucked to the power station. In 2003 the coal combusted by Eskom had an average ash content of 28.9 percent and a CV of 19.41 MJ/kg. Reactive maceral, vitrinite proportions are lower than the inert inertinite maceral. These characteristics are attributed to the unique depositional environment, climatic conditions, flora during the Permian and the mining practice of exporting the high quality processed steam coal to mainly the European and Middle East Markets.
