The occurrence of spontaneous heating/fire in slag muck dump is creating problem for environment. Generally, fire takes place due to the presence of carbonaceous material in muck dump. Blast furnace slag is the by-product generated during the manufacture of molten iron. It is generated due to the fusion of limestone and other fluxes with the ash from the coke and siliceous and aluminous component of the ferrous burden. It contains oxides of silica, aluminium, iron and rare earths and alkali matters along with rare metals. Fly ash is obtained from the electro static precipitator and cyclone separator units during cleaning of gas. It contains silica and oxides of metal. Jugsalai slag muck dump site at Jamshedpur, India is very close to the river Kharkai. In past, most of the solid wastes are dumped in the dump site without any consolidation. This dumps are mainly contains slag and other metallurgical solid matter. About 15 Nos. of boreholes upto 20 meter depth were carried out on the dump to determine the load bearing capacity of the existing dump material. There were six boreholes at the upper portion and rests were located at lower portion of the slag dumping area. After carrying out the boreholes in the muck dump. It was left opened for more than one and half years. Due to interaction of air, heat was accumulated and temperature was increased. Due to spontaneous heating in the muck dump, smoke was coming and fire was started. The objective of this paper is to describe the scientific investigation of the slag muck dump for ascertaining the status of fire and utilisation of suitable industrial wastes for control of spontaneous heating/fire of slag muck dump.
