摘要

The static instability of an existing embankment dam after years of satisfactory service is indicated by an apparent differential settlement in the embankment, wet areas on the downstream slope or toe portion of the dam and a gradual development of an adverse seepage pattern through the dam and/or its foundation, to name a few. Differential settlements between sections along the axis of a dam can lead to the development of transverse cracks through the embankment, which could allow passage of water and progressive embankment failure by erosion and piping. It is essential to investigate and understand possible causes of embankment instability so that effective and efficient corrective actions can be designed and implemented to mitigate the problem.
