Background:The expanding action mechanism of spring assisted therapy must be better understanding to improve craniosynostosis treatment. Objective: An experimental study using a rabbit model was realized to analyze the behavior of the calvaria under the expanding action of springs. Methods: thirteen animals divided in four groups. The internal spring expanders were posicioned in the suture and parassutural areas. Radiolocal and histological were avaluated with two, four, eight and twelve weeks after spring implantation. Results: A bigger separation between the edges of the craniotomy was seen at the spring mediated groups when compared with the group without spring use. No difference in bone regeneration was observed when analyzing the histological features between the spring mediated groups. Conclusion: We can conclude that the springs act in a similar way no matter if the craniotomy was placed at the sagittal suture or at a parassagittal region.
