Finishing Characteristics on Titanium Materials of Different Phase in Dry Centrifugal Barrel Finishing

Titanium (Type 2 in JIS) and titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V of Type 60 in JIS and Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al) of different phase are finished in dry centrifugal barrel finishing and their finishing characteristics are experimentally examined. A square plate of 15 mm in side and 4 mm in thickness is used as a workpiece. Three types of media, which are made from nylon 6 containing abrasive grains of aluminum oxide for dry barrel finishing, are used. They are for very rough finish, for rough finish and for medium finish but their shapes and sizes are the same equilateral triangular prism (Δ10×10 mm). The media charging ratio and the turret rotation speed are fixed at 50 vol% and 200 min{sup}(-1). The stock removal, surface roughness and edge radius of workpiece are measured after every given hour of finishing. The weight loss of media is also measured at the same time. The stock removal and edge radius increase with the weight loss of the media. The surface roughness is achieved according to the uses of three media though the stock removal shows the different tendency from the surface roughness.
