Finishing Characteristics and Residual Stress on Workpiece Surface in Dry Barrel Finishing

Dry barrel finishing is one of the barrel finishing methods. It is accomplished without using water and is being used due to the recent development of new media. The media developed for dry barrel finishing is made of nylon resin mixed with abrasive grains. With the use of this media, workpieces of plain carbon steel (JIS S45C) were finished in a centrifugal barrel finishing operation under various finishing conditions, after removing their residual surface stresses by annealing. Furthermore, for consideration of the influence of workpiece hardness, workpieces of the high carbon chromium bearing steel (JIS SUJ2) were dry-barrel-finished after a heat treatment to change their hardness. The residual stress on the workpiece surface finished in dry barrel finishing was measured with an X-ray diffraction stress measuring method. It was found that the residual stress on the workpiece surface was also compressive in dry barrel finishing. It did not depend on the finishing conditions, but became large if the workpiece hardness was large.
