Clefts of lip and palate (CLP) belong to the most common anomalies with still unclear pathogenesis. We investigated palate tissue in 37 children with complete unilateral CLP and 15 children with bilateral CLP for growth factors, barx1 and apoptosis. Results. FGFR1 marked numerous structures of tissues in UCLP, but abundant - in BCLP patients of both dentition ages. Numerous cells showed strong expression of bFGF in UCLP independently from age, while BCLP patient of mixed dentition demonstrated decrease of factor. NGFR more characterised BCLP. bNGF was notably decreased. TGFβ demonstrated intensive expression only in UCLP. barx1 was more prominent in BCLP before mixed dentition. Apoptosis increased in BCLP. We conclude on the modulation (regeneration/exhausting) of tissue properties by the increase of FGFR1 and/or decrease of NGF in complete clefts; role of TGFβ in severity of clefts, and more variations of growth factors and apoptosis in BCLP tissue.
