Video sequences are usually compressed to reduce storage and transmission capacity. However, depending on the coding method used, compression may introduce coding artifacts, which deteriorate the quality of video after decompression. In this paper, subjective experiments are conducted to compare the performance of the H.264 and AVS codecs on the overall quality and visible artifacts for CIF (Common Intermediate Format) videos. The results show that the codecs H.264 and AVS-P2 with B frame perform similarly on CIF videos displayed on both a CRT and LCD. It is also shown that format conversion (scaling) introduces new artifacts.
