The paper focuses on a GIS-based method for investigating the impact of nitrogen dosage and sowing rate on yield in winter wheat (2002) and winter barley (2005) by taking into account the effect of within-field soil variation. In 2002, higher yields were obtained in better quality soil classes as expected but higher rates of nitrogen fertilisation did not increase yield. In 2005, nitrogen fertilisation increased yield only in low quality soil classes. The GIS-based analysing methodology is suitable for deriving decision rules for site-specific farm management under varying within-field soil conditions and enables new possibilities for cost effective on-farm research.
