Excess phosphorus (P) in aquacultural effluents accelerates algae growth and decomposition with undesirable effects on water quality and aquatic species in natural streams. Phosphorus associated with the particulate phase can be removed via settling processes, but removal of soluble P from wastewaters is more difficult. Trivalent metal salts such as alum or ferric chloride are often utilized in treatment of municipal wastes (Metcalf and Eddy, 1991), but may not be cost-effective for aquaculture, depending on operating conditions.
