There are three main techniques for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes currently used around the world. These are; a) Arc Discharge b) Laser Ablation c) Chemical Vapor Deposition A summary of the main features of each process compared side by side is shown in Table 1.0. The electric arc discharge process works by utilizing two graphite electrodes in arc welding type process. The welder is turned on and the rod ends are held against each other in an Argon atmosphere to produce or grow carbon nanotube, CNT. Yield of CNT by this process is low and growth of CNT orientitation are random in nature.
