Hydrogen is gaining a great deal of attention as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines(ICE) and as an energy carrier for fuel cell vehicles (FCV). However, on-board storage of hydrogen forautomotive applications has been identified as a major challenge. This paper provides an overview ofrecent advances in the use of magnesium hydride based nanomaterials for solid state hydrogen storage.Particular emphasis will be placed on hydrogen storage capacity, hydrogenation and dehydrogenationkinetics and cyclic behavior, and methods of production. Research directions for improving the storageproperties will be proposed.
