At-Sea Measurements for Ship Hydromechanics

Over the past several years the US Navy's Office of Naval Research, Ship Wave Breaking & Bubble Wake Program has focused on developing a comprehensive database of model-scale ship generated wave field measurements for use in the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics predictive tools. Accompanying this effort has been the development of advanced measurement techniques and instrumentation systems, which have provided higher quality data, as well as data that had to date been unobtainable. In this paper we attempt to provide an overview of the tests and summarize the results of approximately 8 years of ship hydrodynamics field work. While not exhaustive, the paper seeks to highlight new insights gained from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's and NSWC- Carderock's application of a range of measurement techniques using above and below water imaging, underwater acoustics, conductivity measurements, LIDAR, laser imaging, and RADAR
