SRS, IMRT, IGRT OTHER NOVEL RADIATION TECHNOLOGIES NOW BEING USED IN VETERINARY MEDICINE

In the 1990s the field of Radiation Oncology underwent a renaissance due to the development of new technologies. These technologies were not just elegant physics-based devices looking for medical applications. These developments, particulary IMRT andPET/CT, enhanced and enabled better application of known radiation biology principles. In the early part of this century advancement in stereotactic imaging technology (image guided radiation therapy, IGRT) made it possible to oligofractionate radiosurgery. Called stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) or stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), this technique uses large doses per fraction targeted at the tumor, sparing normal tissues by avoidance. Improved imaging has also made dynamic adaptive radiation therapy (DART) possible. DART is where the planning target volume is modified as the patient responds to treatment.
