Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common heart disease in the cat. It is known to be inherited in at least some breeds of cats including the Maine Coon and Ragdoll among others. A causative genetic mutation has now been identified in both of these breeds. Breeders, pet owners and veterinarians can easily have cats tested for the mutation. Both mutations appears to be fairly breed specific. There is no evidence that these mutations are causative for the disease in other breeds.
