Hypothyroidism continues to be the most common endocrine disorder of the dog and remains a priority disease among dog breeders and exhibitors. Hypothyroidism is manifested systemically by its association with an overall decreased metabolic rate. Clinical signs reflect lower metabolic rate and decreased tissue turnover and include obesity, predisposition to infection, alopecia or delayed hair growth cycle, skin changes, anemia, altered lipid metabolism, and possibly reduced reproductive efficiency.
