Lean, Six Sigma, and Human Factors Engineering were some of the tools used by a multi-disciplinary team at Barnes-Jewish Hospital to improve the entire process from patient admit to discharge on 13 Medicine divisions. A value stream analysis was conducted to reveal that the current state process includes busywork, rework and frustrations of the physicians, rework in due to hand-offs and unsatisfactory patient flow. After a future state was envisioned and gaps were identified, and over a dozen different projects and events were performed to improve physician satisfaction and patient safety.
