The aetiology of PMWS has yet to be fully elucidated. While the virus porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) appears to play an essential role in the disease model for PMWS, additional, as yet undetermined factor(s) appear to be required for the full expression of clinical disease. End stage disease is characterised by immune dysfunction [1,2] and it was hypothesised that examination of the immune system in the period prior to the expression of clinical disease would identify changes that were characteristic to the development of PMWS.
