PAN EUROPEAN HARMONISATION OF PROCEDURES ASSOCIATED WITH THE STUDY AND DIAGNOSIS OF PCV2-ASSOCIATED DISEASES (PCVD)

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is associated with a number of swine diseases, notably postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS)'. Diagnosis of PMWS requires clinical symptoms of disease, the presence of characteristic microscopic lesions andthe demonstration of PCV2 antigen in association with such lesions2. Although a number of research groups have developed different reagents and protocols for the study of PCV2, the procedures must be standardised to ensure a uniform approach to studyingPCVD. A series of ring trials have been performed as part of an EU-led consortium project (16 partners) with the principal aim of harmonising PCV2-related protocols. Procedures included the detection of PCV2 antigens (Ag) in tissue sections, the detection of PCV2 DNA, antibody (Ab) and infectious virus in tissue samples or blood components.
