PHOXIM 7.5 (SEBACIL POUR-ON ) FOR TREATMENT OF HOG LICE (HAEMATOPINUSSUIS) IN PIGS

Hog lice are major ectoparasites of pigs which infest pigs in all parts of the world. Today, in large scale piggeries with regular antiparasitic treatment for mange prevention, hog lice are seldom found. But in small conventional piggeries and in organic pig farming hog lice are frequently reported. Hog lice irritate their hosts by taking frequent blood meals. Attempts to relief the irritation, infested pigs scratch themselves or rub against available objects. Economic damage is reported as a lower feed conversion rate and arrested growth in young piglets. Hog lice can also transmit pathogen viruses and bacteria. The objective of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of phoxim, an organophosphate with high insecticidal and acaricidal efficacy and low mammalian toxicity, against hog lice under field conditions in Germany.
