The control of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome has not been achieved, despite the fact that several vaccines are commercially available. Consequently, several vectors have been used to express high levels of proteins thought to be implicated in protection, including Aujeszky’s disease virus (ADV), which has a linear genome of about 150 kbp into which foreign genes can be stably inserted. In a previous study by our group a recombinant ADV (ADVr) containing ORF5 of PRRS virus has been produced and characterized in vitro and in vivo. However, this virus did not protect immunized pigs against PRRS challenge, probably due to moderate and transient expression of the protein that was not sufficient to induce an immune response in vaccinatedpigs (Alvarez et al., 2004).
