Live body weight of livestock can be estimated by measuring other body characteristics (1, 4). Length and girth have been used to predict body weights of cows in Denmark in 1997 (2). Also, commercially-available weight bands and special tape measureshave been used to determining body weight in animals. Marketing pigs in Western Kenya is a major challenge, with small-scale farmers receiving small returns for their pigs (3). The most accurate method of measuring a pig's weight is by weighing with a spring scale (4), but these farmers cannot afford such scales. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate models for predicting live body weight in pigs using length and girth measurements in Western Kenya.
