Evaluation of the effects of tilmicosin (Pulmotil AC~R) administered in the drinking water on nursery pigs inoculated with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) constitutes one of the most important disease problems that the swine industry faces today (1). It is well known that alveolar macrophages are the primary target of PRRSV (2). Tilmicosin antiviral activities have been studied both in vitro and in-vivo with PRRSV. Tilmicosin inhibited PRRSV replication in porcine alveolar macrophages in a dose dependant manner (3). Other studies indicated that tilmicosin appeared to reduce the number of viralparticles in circulation and the severity of the disease in experimentally infected nursery pigs (3, 4) as well as in sow herds during field study (5, 6). The objective of this study was to assess the effect of tilmicosin (Pulmotil AC~R) administered in drinking water to nursery pigs on viremia, immune response, clinical and production parameters and severity of PRRSV infection.
