Influenza viruses currently circulating throughout the world in swine population are subtypes H1N1, H3N2 and H1N1. Recently, the isolation of a novel swine influenza virus H3N1 was reported (4) but it has never been previously isolated in Europe. Theisolation and characterization of the novel H3N1 subtype from pigs in Italy in 2006 are described here.
