Swine influenza (SI) is a common disease in Mexico. During the last few years several laboratories have begun to identify a new strain of virus. Besides classical H1N1 (cHlNl), H3N2 has been involved in several outbreaks. Webby et. al. (1) have reported the replacement of the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes from classical H1N1 into H3N2, thereby creating a novel reassortant HlNl(rHlNl) influenza virus. SI vaccination programs in the Mexican states use bivalent vaccines containing cHlNl and H3N2. However, despite vaccination there have been some outbreaks due to SI. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the presence of antibodies to rHINI in swine sera during 2005-2006.
