ADULT STONEFLY BEHAVIOR BEFORE AND AFTER MATING

The postemergence behavior of adults of three species of Perlodidae (Stavsolus japonicus, Isoperla aizuana, Tadamus kohnonis) was observed in a cage under seminatural conditions and adult behavior pre- and post-mating was compared. Most of the stoneflies positioned themselves among the branches throughout their adult stage; however, the distribution pattern of individuals was different before and after mating. They tended to be on the ceiling and walls before mating and on the ground after mating. Before mating, individuals on the ceiling and walls were active and their antennas were moving rapidly; however, individuals on the ground did not move. After mating, individuals on the ground were observed walking around, though individuals on the ceilingand walls did not often move. Perhaps individuals found on the walls and ceiling before mating were going to fly away; whereas, females on the floor and under the stones after mating were going to oviposit.
