Interaction Selectivity between Lignin and Phenolic Compounds

Sorption of phenolic compounds onto wood actually occurs in several different situations, which go from environmental processes such as water decontamination (1,2) to food processes such as barrel aging of wines (3,4). Although the composition of the liquid medium differs between these systems, sorption mechanisms appear to rely on some common features, one of which being that among wood macromolecules, lignin seems to be responsable for the selective sorption of aromatic hydrocarbons (1,2,5,6). Here we report a study of the sorption of phenolic compounds onto oak wood or lignin, either in the vapour phase or in an acidic liquid medium, with the aim of discriminating and characterizing different possible mechanisms according to the nature of the phenolics.
