Amphiphilic alkyl-poly(N-acetylethyleneimine)s (Alkyl-PAEI) with different degree of polymerization were prepared by cationic-ring-opening polymerization of 2-methyl-2-oxazoline with noctadecyl tosylate. Subsequent hydrolysis yields amphiphilic linear alkyl-polyamines (Alkyl-PEI). Optical microscope images of water penetration scan for the Alkyl-PAEI with crosspolarized light indicated the formation of lyotropic liquid phases. The micelle formation in aqueous media was established by surface tension measurements and a fluorescence study. The Alkyl-PEI prepared in this way resemble the biomolecules associated to the highly-ordered silica structures of diatoms with respect to their functional groups and represent therefore a bioinspired model for a template in the production of porous silica.
