This study was undertaken to understand the effects of frit on porcelain tile composition. Porcelain tiles are widely used products due to their excellent mechanical, physical and chemical properties. Porcelain tiles should perform basicly low water absorption, high mechanical strength and high stain resistance. To attain these desired properties, beside commercial raw materials, alternative ones are thought with respect to economical reasons. Premilled frit, used for transparent glazes, was added to a standard composition in different amounts by replacing the fluxing component, sodium feldspar, and expensive clay. Various tests as water absorption, firing shrinkage, flexural strength and staining resistance were performed to understand the effects of frit on physical and thermal properties of the final product. To see the effects of frit on sintering behaviour of the compositions, optical dilatometer analyses were undertaken. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies were carried out to analyze the microstructure. Various addition of frit showed its effect as a fluxing agent lowering the viscosity of the glassy phase thus, reducing the soaking time and sintering temperature of the composition.
