The main factors, which influence the quality of any metal castings, are the following: chemical composition, the type of mould, rate of filling, and rate of solidification. All of these operational parameters are very important in reducing casting defects such as cold shuts, nonmetallic inclusions, and porosity. This investigation was focused on the study of the mould filling phenomena in the casting process. The paper gives analytical solutions of the temperature field of the plane channel wall and of cooling of the molten metal flow in the flat runners of permanent moulds. The adequacy of these solutions to real process of heat transfer is checked using experimental investigations.
