Various constituents of interest (COIs) have impacted an approximately 50,000square-foot (4,645-square-meter) lake. The average lake water depth is 2 feet (0.6 meters), and the lake sediments extend approximately 8 to 11 feet (2.5 to 3.5 meters) below the sediment/water interface. Physical characterization of lake sediments indicates that the lake sediments consist of soft, black to gray, clayey silts with organics and fill material. Assorted lenses of silty sand and gravel are present within the silt. Fill material observed in the lake includes rock and foundry sands. In-situ solidification/stabilization (ISS) of the entire lake has been approved by the state regulatory agency as a remedial action to diminish COI mobility, leaching and risk. The lake adjoins an active railroad embankment, thus strength and geotechnical stability also are desired in the final ISS product.
