Treating lakes (1) with inflowing acid loads for pH-stabilization, comprises providing bicarbonate buffer and introducing gaseous carbon dioxide into the deeper layers of a lake during a period of stagnation under stratified conditions. The introduction is made to complete conditioning of the hypolimnion, and subsequently additional lime suspension is introduced into the epilimnion. The two substances accumulate at the intermediate thermocline (metalimnion) due to their density, and both the substances react during the descent into the hypolimnion to bicarbonate. The substances are evenly mixed throughout the water body in the period of stagnation phase following the circulation phase such that the whole lake forms a bicarbonate buffer for pH stabilization.
