The United States Air Force performed a second phase of a treatability study at the Sites 5/14 Contaminant Plume, located at South Base, Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), California. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a horizontal well as an injection point for potassium permanganate (KMnO4) to treat trichloroethene (TCE)-contaminated groundwater. Baseline TCE concentrations in the study area ranged from 2 micrograms per liter (μg/L) to 840 μg/L. Groundwater contamination is limited to the upper 10 to 15 feet of the saturated zone. Aquifer sediments are comprised of sands, silts, clays, silty sands, and clayey sands, with groundwater occurring under unconfined conditions at approximately 50 feet below ground surface.
