Steve Pace (Science Applications International Corporation, Newport, RI, USA) In 1997, the New York Bight Dredged Material Disposal Site, known as the Mud Dump Site (MDS), was de-designated as an official ocean disposal site by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Simultaneously, the MDS and surrounding areas, which had been used historically as disposal sites for contaminated material, were re-designated as the Historic Area Remediation Site (HARS).
