A novel in-place reductive soil remediation treatment method was employed at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station (WPNSTA) in Yorktown, Virginia, for treatment of approximately 8,000 tons of sediment impacted with organic explosive compounds. The technology employed micro-scale zero valent iron (ZVI) in combination with slow- release organic carbon plus nutrients to stimulate both chemical and microbiological reduction of the target compounds. The same technology had earlier been successfully applied in ex-situ format to approximately 5,000 tons of soil in a treatment cell. In 2003, the U.S. Navy decided to apply a novel in-place treatment application method on less heavily impacted sediment at the site. The objective was to reduce the concentrations of the organic explosive compounds prior to placement into the ex-situ treatment cell, in an effort to reduce the time required to complete treatment of each batch.
