Shaw Environmental, Inc., in collaboration with the City of Rialto and the Environ- mental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), has conducted a demonstra- tion study to treat perchlorate laden groundwater to potable-like water using a fluidized bed biological reactor (FBR) treatment train. In late 2006, the California Department of Health Services (CADHS) issued their proposed Public Health Goal (PHG) for perchlo- rate in drinking water at 6 μg/L. Currently, the FBR is one of only two technologies listed by CADHS as "Best Available Control Technology" for the treatment of perchlorate- contaminated water to drinking water. The FBR is a fixed-film reactor in which the bio- logical media is fluidized within the reactor vessel. An electron donor (i.e., acetic acid) is provided to the FBR where, under anoxic conditions, it is used in the denitrification/ perchlorate reduction process. Following the FBR system, water then passes through a surface water treatment plant consisting of a post-aeration unit, multimedia filter, UV system, and an LGAC vessel. The treated water is then made available for groundwater recharge.
