Utilizing a Management System Approach to Improve Sustainability Performance of Remediation Projects

Sustainability approaches that simultaneously achieve excellence in environmental stewardship, economic growth, and social responsibility (the triple bottom line – TBL) are being widely applied. Increasingly organizations strive to go beyond compliance and take into account the environmental, economic and social impacts of their activities, including those related to the planning and execution of remediation pro- jects. However, in many cases sustainability efforts are undertaken without a coordinated approach or process for successful implementation, or a system to measure and report on the progress or costs and benefits realized. Often, project sustainability goals and com- mitments are unreasonable to achieve or established without engaging all necessary stakeholders. Utilizing a management system approach can be helpful for successfully integrating sustainability into remediation projects and achieving continual performance improvement. A management system framework can be used for integrating sustainabil- ity into remediation projects through the engagement of project stakeholders, identifica- tion of sustainability indicators, monitoring and measuring of performance, and the communication and reporting of progress to meet various sustainability goals and initia- tives of the remediation project.
