Using pavement trials: Evaluating rutting in forest roads in southern Scotland

Full scale pavement trials were carried out in South West Scotland as part of the research activitiesof the Roads Under Timber Transport Project (R.U.T.T). The main goals of these pavement trials were to evaluatethe performance of aggregate under saturated conditions and relative pavement deformation caused by differenttimber haulage vehicles. A road segment simulating a standard forest road section was constructed on purpose-built facility located at the Ringour Quarry facility. Ten different trials were carried out combining three differentaggregate materials and five types of vehicles. Tyre fitment, axle configuration and tyre pressure were assessedand demonstrated to play an important role on the study of rutting development. Preliminary conclusion drawnfrom the results suggested that management of tyre's inflation pressure and axle overload may be one of the mosteconomic means of managing pavement deterioration in the forest road network.
