Temperature load is one of the main loads for arch dams, especially in the area with large temperature fluctuation, in which case the impact of cold waves is often more critical than hydraulic load. Therefore, it is desirable to study the operating performance of arch dams under extreme temperature conditions in order that some valuable knowledge can be given to guide the design of arch dams. In this paper, the research is performed on Laxiwa arch dam to analyze the stress distributions of the dam body in the cases of annual operation condition and extreme cold wave period. Then, a permanent surface thermal insulation measure is simulated in the analysis to determine its effect on dam stresses. The results demonstrate that, a surface thermal insulation measure with additional local thickening on the downstream surface is efficient to reduce the maximum tensile stress of the dam body and it is necessary to be used to eliminate possibility of dam concrete cracking.
