摘要

The interaction of wheat genotype with growth environment was evident to the early Australian agronomists. This concept is reflected by comments recorded (1869) by the Commission on the Diseases of Cereals: 'I have never had an imported wheat do wellwith me except that [from] Egyptian and Californian [origins]. I think the more similar the latitude, the more easily it would be acclimatized. A great quantity of the English sorts are ... not adapted to our soil here.' (quoted by Wrigley and Rathjen, 1981).
